Ditching Coffee: How, What, and WHY?!
I love coffee. And there have been seasons where coffee does not love me back. Recently I have been in one of those seasons where I saw the signs of my body not tolerating coffee well so i took a little break.
This post will dive into some of the signs you may need to take a break from coffee too, and my faaavorite replacement. Keep the ritual- ditch the coffee crash 👏
TLDR: Anytime I am dealing with excess stress, I cut out coffee because I just dont tolerate it well. But I love the ritual of coffee so swap in MUD WTR- an organic chai and cacao blend with adaptogens and ayurvedic spices that promotes focus, energy, and immunity without the crash.
Signs You May Not Be Tolerating Coffee Well
I know, i know. You think you need that afternoon pick me up because you didn’t sleep well. So it becomes a vicious cycle of caffeinating, poor sleep, followed by more caffeine to try and “wake you up” which just perpetuates the problem.
And then the infamous caffeine crash.
If you are uncertain if you are not tolerating caffeine well, here are some signs to look out for:
racing heart
headaches
poor sleep
anxiousness
jittery/ shaky hands
Or maybe you feel like you are addicted to caffeine and need a bit of a reset. These are all good signs that your body may need a break from the overconsumption of caffeine.
Why I took a break from coffee
I’ve shared before on the blog that 2019 was when my symptoms and health really took a downward spiral. I was struggling with anxiety, poor sleep, amenorrhea, and painful, cystic acne. I was drinking coffee nearly all day long to try and keep up with the never ending fatigue. It was ultimately what threw me into the world of holistic health and functional nutrition and ancestral foods and pro-metabolic nourishment… and it changed my world.
but in the middle of that was a deep intuition that caffeine was not helping my problems. In fact, it was making them a lot worse. So I cut out coffee cold turkey for 30 days and what I learned was that I wasn’t missing the coffee, but the ritual of it.
Journaling and reading the Bible wasn’t the same without a hot cup of coffee in the morning. And for so many people, they feel the same way. They crave that grounding feeling that comes with a warm beverage.
Since 2019 my relationship with coffee has changed a ton. And don’t get me wrong, i still love it. But it isn’t an every day thing any more (let alone a 2 or 3 of 4x a day thing like it was…)
Enter: MUD WTR.
My Drink Replacement
You think i would just limit coffee without having a replacement?! No shot. We are all about nourishing beverages around here. And probably more than anything, the ritual of them. And that is how I first learned about MUD WTR. Literally the front page of their website reads :
“A coffee alternative consisting of 100% organic cacao, ayurvedic herbs and functional mushrooms. With just a fraction of the caffeine found in coffee, you get energy, focus and immune support without the jitters, crash or poor sleep.”
I knew it was just what I was looking for. So I ordered their starter kit and immediately was a fan. (especially since I was doing whole30 at the time and it fit the requirements)

Benefits of MUD WTR
The reason MUD WTR is the perfect replacement for coffee is because it was made to be just that- the perfect replacement for coffee. Plus it doesn’t hurt that the ingredients are 10/10 👏 Here are some of my favorite benefits of mud wtr:
includes Lion’s mane for focus, Cordyceps for (natural) energy and Reishi and Chaga for immunity
supports gut health with prebiotic fiber
A fraction the caffeine of a cup of coffee
tastes like a hot chocolate chai latte 🤤
How I Use MUD WTR
While you can use hot water to mix your mud, I always use milk for a creamy latte! Simply heat up some milk, add a scoop of powder, and froth it up (their frother comes with the starter kit 👏) or in the summer i’ll often have it iced.
It has become so nice to have something that helps give me sustainable energy without the crash or sleeplessness.
I also use their Rooibos caffeine-free drink for in the evenings when I am getting ready for bed. it helps me wind down and have a relaxing evening.
Curious about trying out MUD?!
